Annual Program

The Annual Ooty Altitude Training Camp

Every year, before the major national athletics season, Don's Pole Vault Academy packs up and heads to the Nilgiri Hills of Ooty, Tamil Nadu. At an altitude of approximately 2,240 metres above sea level, athletes undertake a demanding 15km trek through the forested mountain terrain.

This is not a holiday. It is deliberate, purposeful conditioning. At altitude, lower oxygen levels force the heart and lungs to work harder. The cardiovascular adaptations that result — increased red blood cell count, enhanced oxygen utilisation — directly improve athletic performance when athletes return to sea level in Chennai.

The camp has run for over 5 consecutive years, funded entirely by generous friends and sponsors of the Academy. Every rupee spent on this camp is an investment in the athletes' ability to perform under pressure when it matters most.

Why Altitude Training?

Altitude training is used by elite athletes worldwide to gain a competitive edge. At higher elevations, reduced atmospheric oxygen forces the body to produce more red blood cells, increasing its capacity to deliver oxygen to muscles.

When athletes return to sea level, they carry this oxygen advantage for weeks — running faster, clearing bars higher, recovering quicker. For a non-profit academy, the Ooty hills provide a world-class training stimulus at minimal cost.

Day 1 Arrival in Ooty, acclimatisation walk (3km), team briefing
Day 2 Morning 8km trek, afternoon strength exercises, evening debrief
Day 3 Full 15km endurance trek through Nilgiri mountain trails
Day 4 Recovery run, team bonding, goal-setting session for the season
Day 5 Final conditioning session, return to Chennai
